Maehashi was one of four debut writers honored at an event at Sydney’s Doltone House on Thursday night, along with Siang Lu, whose novel whitewash Get Best Audiobook; Book by Crime Author Hayley Scrivenor Tucheng Get general fiction; and books by crime author Shelley Burr wake Received the New Work Award.
Barty and Betts are two-thirds of Aboriginal authors recognized at ABIA, both for their debut memoir: Ngaragu woman Barty for my dream time; Gubrun and Wirangu/Kokatha man Betts boomerang crescent boyThey were joined by Worimi author Paul Callaghan, who won an award for a self-help book for adults from a small publisher dream road.
They join other Aboriginal authors who have recently won literary awards, including many of Monday’s winners NSW Premier’s Literary Awardsincluding Debra Denk, Corey Tutt and Blake Douglas.
ABIA winners are selected by more than 250 publishers, booksellers, agents, media and industry representatives.
